The federal government banned the use of lead shot for waterfowl hunting in 1991. Some states have banned (or are considering banning) lead projectiles for all kinds of hunting as well. Does that mean upland game hunters are out of luck? Not at all, because they have Federal Premium Upland Steel 12 Gauge ammunition!

This shell is loaded with 1 ounce of #6 steel shot. That’s 315 pellets total, so you still get the thick pattern requisite for taking smaller birds. Steel’s relatively lower density would have meant this shell inflicts less damage to its target – if Federal didn’t have the foresight to load it to a higher muzzle velocity. At 1,375 fps, the shell’s stout muzzle velocity is more than sufficient to deliver the killing blow!

Steel may not be as dense as lead, but it is harder. That’s why this shell’s shot pellets are immune to deformation that could have weakened pattern density or shortened penetration depth. Federal’s full-length wads prevent the pellets from scratching the barrel, and their hulls are reloadable as soon as their clean-burning propellant and dependable primers have both served their purposes.
