Winchester AA Steel isn’t 100 percent lead-free. It is loaded with conventional lead styphnate primers. That said, this 12 Gauge target ammo is lead-free where it counts the most: its nontoxic #8 steel shot.

Steel shot is much harder than lead, which is a force behind this shell’s predictably tight pattern. Winchester’s AA wad features thicker petals than usual so as to keep the rigid shot pellets from grinding against the barrel.

Steel shot is much lighter than lead. A #8 steel pellet isn’t effective enough for trap and sporting clays when its muzzle velocity is the same as a usual target load’s ~1,250 fps. That’s why Winchester cranked this round’s MV up to 1,450 fps. You won’t be forced to bear too much recoil, however. This round’s consistent powder burn, hinged AA wad, and lighter payload of shot all contribute to a pretty reasonable amount of kick.
