About This Federal .22 WMR Ammunition

If you need your 22 WMR bullet to neutralize a threat, then you really don’t want it undergoing terminal expansion. That’s the theory behind Federal Premium Punch!

This purpose-built self-defense cartridge is loaded with a 45 grain jacketed hollow point. The Punch JHP is designed to minimize expansion for the same reason why it’s heavier than average: it’s meant to conserve forward momentum so it can penetrate as deep as it possibly can into the threat’s chest zone.

This round’s 1,000 fps muzzle velocity suggests that it’s weaker than normal. Not so! Federal recorded that figure with an 2” barrel – like the kind you’d find on a little EDC pistol – to provide a more accurate estimation of real-world performance. Out of a rifle barrel, this round’s muzzle velocity should rise closer to ~1,800 fps.

Federal guards this ammo against failures to fire by plating both its bullets and its cases in nickel, a low-friction metal which is innately anticorrosive. The bullet’s profile is also shaped to provide the smoothest possible feeding into any 22 Mag firearm’s open chamber.
