Federal didn’t name this 357 Magnum round’s bullet the “Versatile Hollow Point” because it knows how to sing and dance. The VHP satisfies the criteria for two different applications: target shooting, because it’s not so sophisticated that it costs a lot; and self-defense, because it delivers fierce terminal expansion.

The VHP is a high-quality jacketed hollow point. The bullet’s partial jacket makes it tough enough to penetrate barriers and soft tissue without breaking apart into ineffective fragments. The VHP’s wide-diameter hollow point nose cavity ensures that the whole bullet will widen out as it bores through soft tissue. The VHP’s broad, circular meplat doesn’t create the most aerodynamic profile a bullet could possibly have, although it does make this ammo perfectly safe for use in lever-action carbines.
