Federal designed this 380 ACP cartridge from their Personal Defense line of ammunition to really deliver out of a subcompact handgun. Its relatively heavy 99 grain projectile and low muzzle velocity come together to reduce the amount of recoil you’ll experience, letting you direct rapid fire more accurately. Its bullet, a jacketed hollow point HST, reliably expands to a six pointed star shape during penetration, and its cannelure permits it to travel through a target more deeply but without posing a great risk of dangerous penetration.

This round is ideal for self-defense in a dark environment, as its propellant is flash-suppressed to preserve a shooter’s night vision. It’s able to feed highly reliably in a semi-auto as well: Not only is its bullet profile optimized for that job, but its nickel plating is inherently low friction. Nickel also protects against corrosion, so this round is content to sit in a magazine for years without losing its potency!
