The venerable .45 ACP cartridge is an excellent choice for personal defense and its performance is greatly enhanced with these jacketed hollow point rounds from Hornady. This ammunition is loaded to +P pressure so make sure your pistol or carbine is rated the same before firing.

Hornady has been around for over 60 years and has been so successful at designing effective bullets that many other companies use their projectiles when creating finished ammunition for hunting and self defense. The eXtreme Terminal Performance line of bullets is well-known for superb accuracy and reliable expansion at any velocity thanks to a wide mouth hollow cavity with deep serrations in the copper jacket.

200 grains makes for a medium weight bullet in the .45 ACP caliber and combines with the +P pressure load to fly downrange faster and create a devastating wound profile. XTP bullets possess a thicker jacket at the base which will retain the weight of the lead core after impact and preserve the momentum needed to penetrate deep enough to reach vital organs.

When tested from a 5 inch barrel, these rounds leave the muzzle at 1,055 feet per second while carrying 494 foot-pounds of energy. While they are faster than standard 230 grain bullets, these rounds still travel at subsonic speeds and are great for use in a suppressor.
