PMC calls this round’s bullet a “light armor piercing,” or LAP. We’re calling it M855 because most folks already know it by that name, and it is essentially the same exact thing. The 62 grain FMJ’s core is lead in the rear, steel in the front, which is why it excels at its intended application (namely piercing light armor). The heavier bullet’s added heft helps it retain more momentum as it races downrange – hence the reason for its higher 0.304 G1 ballistic coefficient (as recorded with a 20” test barrel).

To reiterate, the M855/LAP bullet contains steel. It will attract a magnet, and accordingly may not be welcome at whichever gun range you frequent. The bullet’s partial steel core will also put a permanent pockmark on a steel target’s surface.
