This 5.56x45 ammunition will attract a magnet – but not because its bullets have cheap bimetal jackets. The M855 cartridge’s FMJ projectile conceals a partial steel core beneath its jacket!The M855 bullet’s steel core is aptly named the “penetrator.” It reliably punctures steel plating, and may also tunnel up to 20” deep within soft tissue. You’re certainly not obligated to appreciate this ammo for its combat applications. It works just fine for target practice! But if you’d like your range loads to pack a little extra punch just in case you ever have to use them for self-defense, then M855 ammo makes an excellent investment.
Its steel insert makes the M855 bullet weigh 62 grains instead of the usual 55. The ideal barrel twist for the heavier bullet is 1:9 or 1:8, but a faster or slower twist won’t convey an appreciable difference during conventional target shooting.
This ammo features what Winchester calls “robust heat treated” cases. They’re discolored where they have been annealed for added durability, but they’re still factory fresh. Non-corrosive and Boxer-primed, just like all good American range ammo should be!
