5.7X28MM Hornady BLACK 40 GRAIN V-MAX (25 ROUNDS)

Hornady’s V-MAX is usually loaded in varmint rifle cartridges. This makes sense, because the V-MAX is specifically designed for hunting varmints. But it’s also an extremely effective choice of bullet for the FN 5.7×28mm: everyone’s favorite bottleneck pistol round.

Hornady bestowed this round with their 40 grain V-MAX: just like the one they would supply to FN when the Belgian company is producing their coveted SS197SR sporting cartridges. Naturally, it excels at all the same applications. The V-MAX’s awesome low-drag profile and virtually perfect rotational stability (supplied by its AMP jacket and swaged lead core) make it a perfect choice for precision target shooting. The V-MAX’s violent terminal fragmentation (supplied by its polymer tip, deep nose cavity and thin jacket) make it a deadly choice for varmint hunting as well.

This round’s 1,810 fps muzzle velocity (4.8” test barrel) enables it to reach 45 yards at a velocity of 1,600 fps. Hornady says that’s the lowest velocity at which the V-MAX will expand. Of course, if you’re hunting varmints with an AR, this round’s effective range will necessarily increase a great deal.
