Suitable for AK-74 pattern rifles, these cartridges differ from 5.45 surplus rounds in their use of a non-corrosive Berdan primer, which makes cleaning less of a chore. The non-reloadable steel cases, which the AK-74 was designed to use on a regular basis, have a polymer coating that aids with feeding and ejection to boost the already impeccable reliability of the AK series. These rounds use a 69 grain bimetal jacket bullet and have mild magnetic properties that may make them unsuitable for some indoor ranges

The Russian 5.45x39mm cartridge, introduced in the 1970s alongside the AK-74, is the Eastern Bloc counterpart to the 5.56x45 NATO cartridge. Like 5.56 NATO, it is widely used in front line service with the armed forces of the Russian Federation and many other forces using Russian and ex-Soviet equipment. It remains something of a hidden gem in the US market, delighting those who try it with its flat-shooting, high-velocity ballistics. It also compares favorably in cost relative to the far more popular 5.56 NATO/.223 Remington.
