Posted onI dont exactly know what happens when this round impacts. I do know that once it does some decent chunks can break off and that in pass throughs the exit hole is MASSIVE. I have tried this and Wolf FMJ on meat targets with water jugs backing it up and it tears the heck out of pork bone in roasts with the captured remnants indicating a lot of nasty stuff happening before the round exits slowed down considerably by disrupting the meat it passed through. The exit holes between the HP and the FMJ are night and day different with the HP leaving over twice the messy hole on the backside of the meat target. I am too lazy and too cheap to get into ballistic gel and most ballistic gel doesnt have bone inside. Examining the roast when running an HP through it showed a massively shattered shank bone with incredible havoc raised both before but especially after impacting the bone. I dont believe that the tiny HP actually mushrooms much and my recovered rounds seemed to verify that but the round........comes apart but stays roughly semi intact on its journey and it appears that if nothing else the tiny HP does cause the rounds to tumble pretty violently.
Though its hard to find I have also tested Wolf SP ammo in this caliber and man Im telling you its a tested and proven great hunting round. I have used that ammo the past 3 hunting seasons and dropped big mulies where they stood each time and that surprised the heck out of me. Not sure how this HP would perform as a hunting round and for always wanting a clean as possible kill I will continue to use the SP ammo for hunting but should the current communist executive branch have its desired wants passed into law I would eagerly use on hand HP ammo for hunting. Self defense? Well, all the 7.62X39 rounds are exceedingly terminal against a 2 legged perpetrator of human size.......exceedingly. -

Posted onGood ammo for AK, and transfers more energy and mushrooms and fractures on impacting target than FMJ. I use FMJ for target plinking and longer range targets, and the JHP 7.62x39 for my self-defense reserve stash. Fired about 140 rounds of Wolf JHP.

Posted onIf, like now Ammoman has the HP version of the Wolf 7.62X39 ammo at a lower price than the FMJ then get it. It is every bit as consistent and accurate and clean as any hardball ammo in a similar caliber made in this country or in the case of Wolf, Russia. Since the advent of the polycoating Wolf also cleaned up the powder mix and long gone are the days of the slightly more carbon producing rounds that Wolf and other Russian ammo makers produced for import. Just remember that the tiny hollow point will expand little if any. A round recovered from a Coyote from a distance of almost 300 yards resulted in no noticeable expansion.....though 300 rounds in pushing the range limits of the round. Remember the hardball ammo still has the hollow cavity near the nose which causes great tumbling and massive tissue damage as a result and the HP version does not have this open "pocket". In my mind a more terminal round can be found using standard hardball. The harder to find soft point does expand to a degree but any of the rounds is plenty adequete for deer size game in North America with a decently placed shot.
